Retirement Tips

Free Stuff
There are endless ways to get free stuff. Whether you visit the local drug store for free samples or sign up online for them to be sent to your home, they’re a great way to get what you need for your journey.

Collecting Points
Perhaps you collect “miles” on one credit card and “dollars” on another. Don’t forget to use them! These companies usually have catalogues or web sites where you can redeem what you’ve earned. You can buy everything from actual trips to tickets to shows or movies to car rentals. It all depends on who you collect with and how long you’re willing to wait to redeem! Be sure to check out what your cards have to offer you… and put them to good use!

Discounts
Many places offer discounts to “seniors” as young as 50. You may not consider yourself a senior citizen yet but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take advantage of discounts when they’re offered. Be sure to ask because many places won’t post their discounted rates but if you ask you might be pleasantly surprised!

Contacts
Be sure to always have a list of contacts with you. Even if it’s the name and number of someone you have called every day for the past 15 years and could dial the number in your sleep. When you’re living abroad making phone calls may be more complicated than at home thanks to country codes and area codes.

Language
If you’re going to travel the world or live in a foreign country you really should consider learning a bit of the language before heading there. Look into classes in your hometown or place an ad in the paper looking for a teacher. You’ll be much better off having a head start than waiting until you arrive.

Hobbies & Activities
Traveling allows you to perhaps participate in activities that are not available in your hometown or simply haven’t had time for until now. Make a list of what you like to do as well as a list of things you would like to try. This way you can make inquiries about activities while you find out about potential destinations. If there are several things you want to try and they’re all available in a certain location it might wind up being a great place for you!

Climate
The climate varies drastically around the world. In the time leading up to your retirement start visiting web sites that have weather information for places around the world. This way you can keep track on your own of what the patterns are like for that specific place. If you always find yourself disappointed or hoping for better then perhaps it’s not going to be the best place for you.

Food and Drink
With different countries come different foods. For many people this can make or break their trip or living arrangements. If there is nothing you like to eat, you’re going to get very hungry. Be sure to investigate different cuisines from different countries. Try to find ethnic restaurants in your current hometown that are serving foods from an area you are interested in. This is a great way to get some idea as to how you will be eating when and if you move. Also look into groceries and markets in the area you might move to so you can get an idea of pricing for food.
